Enhanced capacity aims to meet growing community needs |
Meals on Wheels of Greenville has officially commenced operations at its new 25,000-square-foot facility located at 31 Chalmers Road.
This expansion is a significant step forward in addressing the increasing demand for meal services across Greenville County.
The new building, nearly three times the size of the previous location, features a 15,000-square-foot kitchen and 5,000 square feet dedicated to food storage.
These enhancements enable the organization to triple its daily meal production capacity from 2,000 to 6,000 meals.
Executive Director Catriona Carlisle emphasized the importance of this growth, stating, "By 2026, our new home will have the capacity to prepare up to 6,000 meals a day, ensuring even more Greenville County residents receive nourishment and connection when they need it most."
In addition to increased meal production, the facility includes expanded office space for the organization's 32 employees, a board room, wellness room, break rooms, and a circular drive-thru for volunteer meal pickups.
These features are designed to enhance operational efficiency and volunteer engagement.
The strategic location near Interstate 85, Augusta Road, and Pleasantburg Drive improves accessibility for volunteers and streamlines delivery routes.
Meals on Wheels of Greenville has also introduced RxMeals, South Carolina's first Food is Medicine pilot program.
This initiative delivers medically tailored meals to patients managing chronic medical conditions, furthering the organization's commitment to improving community health through nutrition.
The $13 million capital campaign to fund the new facility has successfully raised $12.3 million, covering construction costs and operational expenses for the first three years.
Funding sources include individual donations, corporate contributions, a $2 million state earmarked grant, tax credits, and the sale of the nonprofit's former property on Oregon Street.
With the new facility operational, Meals on Wheels of Greenville is poised to significantly enhance its service capacity, ensuring that no community member is turned away due to facility limitations.
As one volunteer aptly noted, "Being able to take care of everybody in the community has been huge." |
